Writing for the market or yourself?

This week's survey: When you write, do you write for the market or do you write for yourself?

The idealistic answer is the latter, and I've seen this advice repeated many times: write for yourself, not for the market. And though I see a nugget of wisdom in this popular writer's adage, I think that there's also the inescapable fact that there are also less romantic aspects of the writing life for some writers, like paying the bills. :-)

My solution: I write for the market but don't write anything I think I'd regret ten years from now. And I keep the joy in my writing but always being involved in a writing project that is more about the fun than the money.

What about the rest of you? Do you write for the market or do you write for yourself?
