Eliza & the Focused Writing Session

0310wwfc 009 730

Apologies for the hiatus. A lot has happened in my life since I last posted. One of the most significant: I got a book deal. I'm illustrating Michael Ian Black's new picture book, I'M BORED, which is coming out from Simon & Schuster next year. HOW COOL IS THAT?

I've also been taking my illustrating and cartooning far more seriously, and have been drawing a lot more. I've been posting daily doodles on my revamped DebbieOhi.com page, and settling into an illustration style. I used to draw in a ton of styles -- all fun, but it meant that I wasn't really improving in any of them. So I've decided to focus on the loose sketchy style that publishers and art directors seem to like (and frankly, is easiest for me).

One of the reasons I've taken so long to get back to Will Write For Chocolate is because I've never really been happy with that old, tighter style. I -know- it's a big no-no to change illustration styles in the middle of a comic strip but I figure hey, I'd rather change than shut down the comic strip altogether. So welcome to the revamped Will Write For Chocolate! This looser, sloppier style feels much more natural to me, which means I'm more likely to post more often. :-)

Danger, Will Robinson!

I'm switching to a new Wordpress theme to make it easier to update this comic, so things may go suddenly wonky in the next short while. Don't panic -- hopefully I'll get everything revamped sooner than later.

Which character would you like to see more often?

I really need to update more often, I know. :-)

So I'm taking votes. Which character would you like to see more of?

1. Sven (sf writer)
2. Mimi (poet)
3. Eva (romance & horror)
4. Michael (children's writer)
5. Theo (the cat)

or another character?

Going on hiatus

Will Write For Chocolate is going on temporary hiatus (except for a sporadic posting now and then) so that I can focus on finishing some writing projects. If you'd like to know when a new WWFC is posted, please do add my feed to your RSS reader. I'll still be posting writing-related comics to Inkygirl: Daily Diversions For Writers.

Thanks for your continuing support!

Going out of town

I'll be mostly offline until next week. Though there's a non-zero chance I may find the time to do a strip before the weekend (I'm taking my Wacom artpad, but mainly for work), there may not be a new comic until next week.

Meanwhile, feel free to read about my experience as a clown in the 2008 Toronto Santa Claus Parade. :-)

Win a free book! (and learn about memoir writing)

I’m giving away a free copy of Linda C. Wisniewski’s Off Kilter: A Woman’s Journey to Peace with Scoliosis, Her Mother, & Her Polish Heritage over in Inkygirl. Just post a comment at the bottom of my interview with the author; one commenter will be randomly chosen. A well-written, inspiring book!

In the interview, Linda also offers tips for those thinking about writing a memoir.

My NaNoWriMo wordcount

Ok, I confess that I'm not going to reach 50,000 words by the end of November. Too much freelance work came up, and I need the money. However, I still aim to write a little every day and have found NaNoWriMo a great creative inspiration for getting my new fiction project going.

Speaking of inspiration, do check out my interview with Linda Wisniewski about memoir writing, and my interview with Gayle Trent about her new mystery book and how it got published.

Snarkface.com launched!

Hey everyone, I've launched a new online shop called Snarkface. If you're tired of cutesy feelgood greeting cards, this is the place to go. I've loaded it up with snarky holiday greeting cards but will also be creating other snarky items as well.

If you're looking for cards and other items with my regular writing-related comics, please do check out my Inkygirl Gifts For Writers shop on Zazzle. I'll be adding some Will Write For Chocolate goodies there as well. :-)

Thanks so much for your support!
