If you see an 'MT' where an 'RT' usually goes, it means that the user has modified the content of a tweet.
Andrew Spong has a good explanation of why someone would want to do this. Reasons could include correcting a typo, changing a hashtag to share it with another Twitter chat community, indicating that you've added or deleted an element of the tweet.
I don't tend to use MT because I'm not sure enough people know what it means yet.
